Taking Care of Your Crowns

Temporary Crowns

  • Avoid chewing for at least one half-hour to allow the temporary cement to set.
  • Avoid eating hard or sticky food, especially chewing gum.
  • Try to chew on opposite side of your mouth.
  • Brush normally but floss very carefully, remove floss from side.
  • To reduce any discomfort or swelling, rinse with warm salt water 3x a day.  It is normal for your gums to be sore for several days.
  • Call us immediately if you temporary crown comes off.  Make sure you save the temporary so it can be re-cemented back on.
  • Call our office if your bite feels uneven or if you have sensitivity or discomfort that increases or continues beyond 3 or 4 days.

Permanent Crowns

  • Avoid chewing ice and other hard objects.
  • Brush and floss normally.
  • To reduce any discomfort or swelling, rinse with warm salt water 3x a day.  It is normal for your gums to be sore for several days.
  • Call our office if your bite feels uneven, or if you have sensitivity or discomfort that increases or continues beyond 3 or 4 days.
